... a freebie just because ...

I've unwillingly been absent from the comment section in many of your blogs.  Apparently Blogger is aware of the problem and is working on it.  What I find strange is that my comments get published on some blogs (approx. 5%).  Whereas when a blog asks me to "select a profile", I can jump through all the hoops and still my comment will not publish.

There have been so many lovely, interesting, thought-provoking posts where I wish I could leave some feedback!

Since my efforts to acknowledge your efforts have been stymied at every turn, I thought I would let you know I'm thinking of you with a little gift.  If the following image with a few words-to-live-by interests you, you can download it for free for your personal use only, as I retain copyright.  Please do not sell it or present it as your own work.  Also, it would be nice if downloaders were also followers.

There are two different versions with the same 'text' (just different fonts and arrangements) so that you can download the one that tickles your fancy or suits your decor if you want to print and hang it.  You are welcome to download them both!  These images were created with one of my photographs, one of my textures made from a photograph, and a word-cloud made at http://www.wordle.net/create.

Don't worry if you cannot leave a comment because of these Blogger commenting issues.  I understand!!  Just download the image and enjoy!

... seeing through every question ...

This is the face of a Buddha in my home, digitally edited with a 'kaleidoscoped' image of another Buddha.

"The silence of the extraordinary faces, the great smiles, huge and yet subtle, filled with every possibility, questioning nothing, rejecting nothing ... The great smiles ... of a peace that has seen through every question without trying to discredit anyone or anything, without refutation ..."

Abstract Digital Images

“There is no abstract art. You must always start with something.
Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.”

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

These abstract digital images began with primitive strokes and primary shapes of squares, rectangles and triangles.  For a tutorial on how I "removed all traces of reality" to create this type of abstract image in Photoshop, visit my other blog, Pixel Dust Photo Art.  It is SO easy!  Believe me.  It begins with the most rudimentary strokes with your mouse and is completed with a few tools in the editing program.  (The third image above had one of my textures added to it.)

for easy installation, just click (tap) here

The following 'conversation' between a computer technician and a client seems to be circulating on the Web.  I  received it recently from a few different sources - twice with smiley faces.  (There are a few different versions out there.) It seems, according to my Google research, to have originated with  http://www.weboflove.org/, however, as with any of these things, I am not exactly sure of the source.  Whoever created it, it is amusing and instructive.  See what you think:

Install Love on the HUMAN Computer

Customer:  I really need some help. After much consideration, I've decided to install LOVE. Can you guide me through the process?

Tech Support:  Yes, I can help you. Are you ready to proceed?

Customer:  Well, I'm not very technical, but I think I'm ready to install it now. What do I do?

Tech Support:  The first step is to open your HEART. Have you located your HEART?

Customer:  Yes, I have, but there are several other programs running right now. Is it okay to install while they are running?

Tech Support:  What programs are running?

Customer:  Let's see... I have PAST-HURT.EXE, LOW-ESTEEM.EXE, GRUDGE.EXE, and RESENTMENT.EXE running now.

Tech Support:  No problem. LOVE will gradually erase PAST-HURT.EXE from your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory, but it will no longer disrupt other programs. LOVE will eventually overwrite LOW-ESTEEM.EXE with a module of its own called HIGH-ESTEEM.EXE. However, you have to completely turn off GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.EXE. Those programs prevent LOVE from being properly installed. Can you turn those off?

Customer:  I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?

Tech Support:  My pleasure. Go to your Start menu and invoke FORGIVENESS.EXE. Do this as many times as necessary until it's erased the programs you don't want.

Customer:  Okay, now LOVE has started installing itself automatically. Is that normal?

Tech Support:  Yes. You should receive a message that says it will stay installed for the life of your HEART. Do you see that message?

Customer:  Yes, I do. Is it completely installed?

Tech Support:  Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to other HEARTs in order to get the upgrades.

Customer:  Oops. I have an error message already.  What should I do?

Tech Support:  What does the message say?

Customer:  It says, "ERROR 412-PROGRAM NOT RUN ON INTERNAL COMPONENTS."  What does that mean?

Tech Support:   Don't worry, that's a common problem. It means that the LOVE program is set up to run on external HEARTs but has not yet been run on your HEART. It is one of those complicated programming things, but in non-technical terms it means you have to "LOVE" your own machine before it can "LOVE" others.

Customer:  So what should I do?

Tech Support:  Can you pull down the directory called "SELF-ACCEPTANCE"?

Customer:  Yes, I have it.

Tech Support:   Excellent. You're getting good at this. Now, click on the following files and then copy them to the "MYHEART" directory: FORGIVE-SELF.DOC, REALIZE-WORTH.TXT, and ACKNOWLEDGE-LIMITATIONS.DOC. The system will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching any faulty programming. Also, you need to delete SELF-CRITICISM.EXE from all directories, and then empty your recycle bin afterwards to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back.

Customer:  Got it. Hey!  My HEART is filling up with new files.  SMILE.MP3 is playing on my monitor right now and it shows that PEACE.EXE, and CONTENTMENT.EXE are copying themselves all over my HEART.  Is this normal?

Tech Support:  Sometimes. For others it takes a while, but eventually everything gets downloaded at the proper time.  So, LOVE is installed and running.  You should be able to handle it from here.  Ah, one more thing.

Customer:  Yes?

Tech Support:  LOVE is freeware.  Be sure to give it and its various modules to everybody you meet. They will in turn share it with other people and they will return some similarly cool modules back to you.

Customer:  I will!  Thanks for your help!

... watching you ...

Thank you for your thoughts with regard to my "commenting" problems.  I did log off and on as suggested, AND took Margaret's advice to click my heels together and twirl around several times ...  however the issue continues.

So I will give it a bit of time and see what develops.  In the meantime, I am still able to read your many delicious posts and want you to know that I am keeping an eye (or two) out for you ... on my blog scroll.  While I may not be commenting, trust that I am reading and enjoying your postings.  Retrieved some images out of my archives that will illustrate my point in a silly sort of way.  :)

"Every breath you take

Every move you make

Every bond you break

Every step you take

(Ill be watching you)"

But only in the nicest, most non-threatening of ways, of course ...  :)

(No, it is not my eye.  It's the eye of that person, "Anonymous".  I simply borrowed it.)

...googled out...

Just wondering if anyone else is having problems with Google and Blogger today?

Any time I try to leave a comment I am asked to "Select a Profile" (Google) and then I have to type in my email address and password.  When I get back to the comment section I type in the verification word, hit 'publish' and get sent back to "Select a Profile" AGAIN!!

I can't even seem to move from icon to icon in my Google toolbar without having to "Sign In" each time I click to change sites!

AND I just tried to add an image to this post and when I clicked on "Browse" I was asked to "Sign In" again and after waiting forever the upload failed.   Yuk!    Such a tiresome waste of time and SO frustrating!  Is it just me?  I'm probably being optimistic imagining I will even be able to publish this post.

where healing happens

The forest is the place where things begin to turn and grow again ...
If there is a point where life is reduced to nothing,
go completely into nature ...
In the supreme moment of loneliness and sadness
activity begins in the unconscious.
That is when healing happens,
always by nature,
not by doing something special.

~Marie-Louise Von Franz

who says it has to be either/or?

raw, untransformed and full of passion

"I think one of the problems in marriage is that people don't realize what it is.  They think it's a long love affair and it isn't.  Marriage has nothing to do with being happy.  It has to do with being transformed, and when the transformation is realized it is a magnificent experience.  But you have to submit.  You have to yield.  You have to give.  You can't just dictate."   ~Joseph Campbell

And I ask:  Why does it have to be either/or?   Passion or transformation?   While the passion and intensity of a love affair are hard to sustain year after year in a long marriage, why can the transformative experience of a long term relationship not include the natural ebb and flow of a love affair?  While one may move with some resistance toward the idea of transformation as preferable to passion, why can one not yield, give and submit to passion while being transformed?   I'll take both/and, rather than one over the other.  But then again, I can be greedy.  I do love to have my cake and eat it too, or should I say my kiss and transformation too!

I would love to kiss you.
The price of kissing is your life.

Now my loving is running toward my life shouting,
What a bargain, let's buy it.

~ Rumi

'best kept secret' blogs

Have you noticed that there are some fabulous blogs out there that seem to be 'the best kept secret'?  I've noticed several that are deserving of a greater readership, and it seems a shame that so many of us miss out on their informative, funny, beautiful offerings.  So today I am going to mention two blogs that I want to recommend to you, AND I am asking that in your comments you share the name and url if possible of a blog that you think is one of those 'best kept secrets'.

I am not going to go on and on about these two blogs.  Rather I will just let you go and discover them for yourself.  I'm sure you will be captivated.  I am a little wary of doing this, as I have not asked these bloggers for permission to highlight their blog.  I considered it, but it just seemed too conspiratorial and I want this to be something we all do as the spirit moves us.  However, if either of these bloggers ask me to remove my references to them, I will do so.

The first 'best kept secret' I want to tell you about is:

"Neighbor" is the author of this thinking person's blog.  Check out Temporary Reality and see if you feel as stimulated, nourished and inspired by her postings as I do.

~~~~~~~~~
The next 'best kept secret' I want to share here, is:
When I began to prepare this post I had not read the most recent post by this blogger where she reveals herself as "Mila".  I love the authenticity and humor that she brings to every post.  The timing of this recommendation and her post today are quite serendipitous as she writes a fresh introduction to herself.  Do yourself a big favor and check out Here Under the Rainbow.
Now it is YOUR turnPlease share a 'best kept secret' blog that you are aware of - in the comment section of this post.   Feel free to leave a quick comment re this post, and come back later with your best kept secret's URL.   Can't wait to make some great discoveries!
P.S.  There is a new free texture waiting for you to download on my other blog Pixel Dust Photo Art!
hardy, loyal hostas
I love hostas!  There are so many varieties.  Their leaves are big, vibrant and lush.  They are the perfect plant for a shady, woodland garden (like ours).  They push themselves up through the hardest, meanest, driest clay.  They do not mind being hacked in two, three or four and being transplanted at any time during the growing season.  They withstand dry spells.  What a dependable plant.  OH!  And they also adapt well to having their photographs tinkered with in Photoshop!
...new life for an old barn...
While on our drive several days ago to explore the flooding in our region, I snapped a photo through the car windshield of a drab, lonely barn sitting on a barren hill.  I knew this would not be a good photograph, but it would make a great 'canvas' on which to experiment with my textures in Photoshop.   Allow me to show you some of the transformations.
SOOC.  A terrible day and a photograph to match!  I had to catch this shot in between swipes of the windshield wipers.
The above transformation was achieved by cropping, removing the telephone pole and wires, the addition of one of my Pixel Dust textures, the application of some Photoshop Filters and finally, a Levels Adjustment.
Here the sooc is cropped differently, a tree applied with a Brush, and a different texture applied and blended.
Another crop, a different tree Brush and a different texture that adds background color and a Blend Mode that casts the old structure in a silhouette.
Same crop and texture as the previous edit, but here more tree Brushes have been added and the texture tweaked for more intensity in a different Blending Mode.
If you are interested in a freebie texture,
there is one waiting for you at my other blog Pixel Dust Photo Art.
the solid ground of new life
The Opening of Eyes
That day I saw beneath dark clouds
the passing light over the water
and I heard the voice of the world speak out,
I knew then, as I had before
life is no passing memory of what has been
nor the remaining pages in a great book
waiting to be read.
It is the opening of eyes long closed.
It is the vision of far off things
seen for the silence they hold.
It is the heart after years
of secret conversing
speaking out loud in the clear air.
It is Moses in the desert
fallen to his knees before the lit bush.
It is the man throwing away his shoes
as if to enter heaven
and finding himself astonished,
opened at last,
fallen in love with solid ground.
au revoir ...
Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts
and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more.
William Shakespeare, Macbeth
Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on Thee, And I'll forgive Thy great big one on me.
~Robert Frost, "Cluster of Faith," 1962
Too many...
 good people
dying too young.
It is always a jolt,
and somehow,
it always seems
like a dirty trick
 despite the evidence
it is a part of life.
When
will my consciousness
finally absorb that
 those I care about
are not exempt?
Once I come to terms
with my own demise
will I then be at terms
 with theirs?
Too many ...
... the self ...
"The Self is not an object or even a goal, but an activity, a process.  Gerard Manley Hopkins expressed it beautifully:  "...What I do is me; for that I came!"
The Self is the purposiveness of the organism, the teleological intention of becoming itself as fully as it can.  As the rhizome contains the fullness of the flower, so the unified self-hood of the organism is expressed through the variegations of root, stem, flower, pistil and stamen.  The Self is unknowable, though its intentionality may be inferred from its expression through the venues of body, affect, cognition, symptom, dream image and the like...As the Self embodies the totality of the organism and its mysterious, autonomous activity, so we may never know it fully any more than a swimmer could know the ocean, or a thinker conjugate the dome of Heaven.  Hence the fragile ego must content itself with "a sense" of Self, the Self forever unknown, unknowable.
Accordingly, we are always left with partiality though we may believe we know ourselves fully.  There is, in fact, no greater folly than such a hubristic claim."
~ James Hollis
...drive-by shooting...
These shots were taken while driving along the Richelieu River (near our home) which drains out of Lake Champlain in New York State and into the St. Lawrence River which drains out to the Atlantic Ocean.
It feels as if it has been raining forever here in the NorthEast.  April, and now May, have been unseasonably cool, overcast and rainy.  This has resulted in major problems for anyone who lives by the water.  We have many roads closed in the region, families forced to evacuate their homes, businesses closed and in ruins.  Retaining walls, docks, dinghys, logs, etc. are visible floating down river having broken free from their moorings due to the force of the water.  These shots were snapped as we drove through our neighborhood in the rain - mouths agape at the plight of so many homeowners.
We, fortunately, live on higher ground overlooking the river and have been spared the work, worry and financial losses incurred from this flooding.  The waters are expected to crest tomorrow, so even higher water levels are yet to come.
Of course, this region is not alone - so many States are now dealing with flooding issues that are displacing people and delaying the planting of crops.  This has been quite a Spring!
You can see mature trees out in the water, which is approximately 15 feet closer to the road than normal.
The water has crept up a retaining wall and fence on it at the back of a beautiful property.
These properties with a grand sweep up to their doorstep have water pouring in the back of their homes and now even creating little lakes in the front 'yard'.
With the river cresting behind them and lakes forming in front, these people are trapped in their home ... unless they have evacuated.
...meeting yourself, just as you are, with acceptance...
Over the course of the years, I have discovered a magic trick.  It is a simple one, but for many, not an easy one.  Each of us can benefit from learning this simple slight of heart and mind.
The magic is self-acceptance.  Accept yourself, appreciate yourself, have compassion for yourself and malingering problems can fall away.  Of course, as with any magic trick it takes work, time and practice to develop the skill.  Many of us carry around a secret cash of self-loathing carefully groomed by culture, capitalism and consumerism.  In order to command our allegiance and monetary disbursements giant corporations invest millions researching and articulating our vulnerabilities and nurturing our secret fear of not being good enough.  Our fears of not being acceptable are deeply ingrained.  It will take some time and patience to eradicate them.
You may find yourself thinking, "Well, this does not apply to me!"  It has been my experience that most of us resist acknowledging (even to our self) that we harbor pockets of self-loathing.  I recall once reading a comment from the Dalai Lama about how surprised he was at the levels of suppressed self-hate he sensed among people in the West.
Some of us were raised by parents, who though perhaps well-meaning, disciplined using shame.  "What's the matter with you now?"  "You're driving me crazy!"  "Don't be so selfish!"  "Your room is disgusting!"  Over the years shaming eats away at our self-esteem leaving us feeling worth less, shame full.  Without realizing it we live with a constant undercurrent of never feeling quite good enough and loathing our self as a result.
Lack of esteem and lack of self-acceptance can lead to secondary issues of self-sabotage (because of not believing we deserve to succeed), failed relationships, gnawing depression, existential malaise.
Experienced therapists know it is not the school of therapy, the particular techniques used, the topics discussed, the past revisited that necessarily provide the most 'bang for the buck' in therapy.  Rather it is usually the relationship with the therapist that contributes more than anything else to healing and renewal.
Why?  Because with a therapist who knows how to offer unconditional positive regard, who helps you see yourself as good enough, who accepts and appreciates your feelings, vulnerabilities, efforts, concerns, you begin to have a different experience of yourself.  You begin to see yourself through the eyes of the therapist - accepting eyes.  You learn about the work you need to do to feel healthy and whole and you begin to do the work with levels of self-compassion and self-appreciation heretofore unexperienced.
Therapy offering this kind of experiential correction in our view of self takes time.  In today's world of insurance that invariably pays only for short-term therapy, absorbing and integrating unconditional positive regard is not easily accomplished.  The good news is you can also develop self-acceptance and self-compassion on your own.
Here are a few ways to do just that:
refuse to give room to the habit of being self-critical.  If you notice something you have done that you are not pleased with - ask yourself what you can do to correct the situation, and do it.  Then let it go.  Wallowing in calling yourself names and feeling bad about yourself just produces more of the same behaviors and offers more reasons for self-hate.
catch yourself doing something good and silently affirm yourself.  E.g. "Good on me!", or "Well that was not perfect, but it was sure better than the last time.  I'm making progress."   Just as you would deal with a hurt or damaged child, find things about which you can offer praise - but don't lie.  The praise and acceptance must be based in fact and truth.  Concentrate on finding what is praiseworthy about yourself.  And don't tell me there is nothing praiseworthy!  There is and you must step out of your self-critical rut to find it.
*  Jettison the idea of perfection and adopt the concept of good enough.  Of course, in certain areas of your life you will want to strive for excellence, but in a general sense learn to love yourself for being good enough, for being a human on planet Earth.
Here's a little exercise that incorporates findings from acupuncture, energy medicine and positive self-talk:
Find the sore spot that we all have on the upper left quadrant of your chest - somewhere in the heart region.
With two or three fingers gently rub this sore spot in a clockwise direction while at the same time affirming:  "With all my problems and limitations, I deeply love and accept myself."
Apparently rubbing this spot on one of the acupressure meridians helps to remove any blockage in the movement of chi (life energy) throughout the meridian and affects our general perception of self.  It costs nothing, cannot hurt you and is definitely worth a try if you are dealing with a sense of worthlessness.  (It is best to do this in private.  :-)
After using the basic affirmation, you can eventually adapt it to specific situations
"Even though I did not do well on that exam, I deeply love and accept myself."
"Even though I am feeling depressed and lethargic, I deeply love and accept myself."
"Even though I made a huge gaff, I deeply love and accept myself."
"Even though I still harbor a lot of resentment, I deeply love and accept myself."
"Even though I think this is a stupid, useless exercise from Bonnie, and can not possibly help me,  I deeply love and accept myself."
"...telling the truth is often the seed that gives birth to love.  When we are able to honestly name our fear, our sadness, and confusion -- and when we can meet ourselves, just as we are, with acceptance and compassion -- then we cultivate the possibility of an authentic loving kindness toward ourselves.  Without truth, we may learn to accept who we appear to be, but what we are accepting is a lie.  Mindfully naming where we are stuck, frightened, or caught opens the door to genuine self-acceptance and loving kindness toward ourselves and others.
Jack Kornfield, a gentle teacher of Buddhist meditation, says that the essence of spiritual practice is self-acceptance:
"...It is the ground out of which any other freedom or understanding can come.  Our practice is to begin to listen to where we are closed to ourselves, to our bodies, our feelings, our hearts ... and out of this can come a very deep opening, and forgiveness, and healing of the heart.""
Bank On It
Bank On It  -  A Comedic Farce
The Players:
Mr. Middle Class
Bank A (holds Mr. Middle Class'  personal accounts)
Bank B (transfers monies from Bank A to Bank C for Mr. Middle Class)
Bank C (mortgage holder on the home of Mr. Middle Class)
~~~~~~~~

The happy chaos of a middle class family is interrupted by a phone call:

Mr. Middle Class:  Hello

Bank C:  Mr. Middle Class, it appears your mortgage is in arrears.

Mr. Middle Class:  Laughing - that's impossible.

Bank C:  This is not a laughing matter - I have your file in front of me and we have not received  last month's payment on your mortgage.

Mr. Middle Class:  Well you should have received it because I made it, and I and my personal bank, Bank A, have the documents to prove it.

Bank C:  We deal with Bank A all the time and have no record of them transferring your mortgage payment here.

Mr. Middle Class:  Well, because you do not have a branch in the town where I live, I must bring my cheque from Bank A and give it to Bank B to get it to you Bank C - and I do that every month, including last month.

Bank C:  Let's both do a bit of research on this matter and get back to each other this week.  Oh, and sir, if you would do your banking online we would not have this problem.

Mr. Middle Class:  Perhaps - but with the way I make this mortgage payment, I will at least have a stamped, verified, cancelled cheque as evidence that I made the payment.   Okay, I will check with Bank A and Bank B to see what I can find out.

~~~~~~~
Mr. Middle Class assembles his documents and faxes Bank C a copy of his bank-stamped cancelled cheque and bank statement from Bank A showing a mortgage payment for the previous month was withdrawn from his account.
~~~~~~~

Bank C:  Mr. Middle class, we must insist on receiving your mortgage payment for last month or we will have to officially classify your account as being in arrears.

Mr. Middle Class:  Do you have my file in front of you?

Bank C:  Yes.

Mr. Middle Class:  Do you see the bank statement and cancelled cheque dated last month that I faxed you?

Bank C:  Yes I do - but we have no record of this amount being applied to your mortgage.

Mr. Middle Class:  Well, wouldn't applying it to my account be your responsibility - why are you harassing me?

Bank C:  I'm sorry sir, but until your account is up to date it is YOUR responsibility.

Mr. Middle Class:  This is ridiculous.  What more can I do?  I have paid you.  The monies have been deducted from my account.  It seems that someone at your end has not recorded receipt of the monies.

Bank C:  Well, you will have to check with Bank A and Bank B to see if they can trace the funds.

Mr. Middle Class:   Would you not have more means to interact with the appropriate departments and have easier access to the records that would help you trace the misplaced payment?

Bank C:  I'm sorry sir - it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your account is up to date.

Mr. Middle Class:  I looked after my responsibility and made the payment as the evidence in my file demonstrates.  I do not understand how you expect me to gather information from within the banking system.  And, by the way, what about your responsibility to properly manage and record the monies you receive?

Bank C:  Do what you can sir and get back to me in 48 hours.

~~~~~~~
Mr. Middle Class visits Bank A which hold his personal account and has all the facts confirmed but no information or indication of where the monies went.
~~~~~~~

Bank C:  We must receive a mortgage payment for last month immediately.

Mr. Middle Class:  As you know, I made that payment in full last month.  I have sent you the documents to prove it.

Bank C:  You may have made the payment, but we have not received it.

Mr. Middle Class:  And wouldn't that be YOUR responsibility?

Bank C:  We are doing what we can to find it, but in the meantime you need to get your account up to date by making a payment for last month.  It will become a blight on your financial records if you allow your mortgage to fall into arrears.

Mr. Middle Class:  Did you really mean to suggest that you want me to make a second mortgage payment for last month?  And, did you really mean to suggest that MY financial records will be forever marred by an error on YOUR part?

Bank C:  It is in your best interests that your account not appear to be in arrears.  Once you bring your account into good standing, you can then continue your inquiries with all the banks involved to see what happened to your first payment.  Oh ... and sir ... you now owe an additional $_____ in interest for late payment.

Mr. Middle Class:  Do you hear yourself?  This is absolutely absurd.

Bank C:  I am only telling you what is in your best interests sir.

Mr. Middle Class:  How can I ever thank you?

~~~~~~~
Mr. Middle Class makes a second mortgage payment for the previous month (with interest for "late payment") and none of the three banks have any idea nor take any responsibility for the first missing payment.  The mystery of the missing mortgage payment continues.
And you know what the moral of the story is
(The bank facade in the image at the top of this post is not related to any of the bank players in the comedic farce.)
